During the Christmas break, I drove my kids to Michigan to see my Aunt who is recovering from back surgery. She looks great and is getting better. (Hi Marty, no stairs).
My point to this post is basically a shout out to all the pace cars in Chicago.
Please (I'm asking nicely) MOVE OVER!
I also want to mention that I enjoy all the comments about being brave for driving through Chicago during the winter. Considering I've driven through Chicago since I was sixteen, I have no problems even with three whiny kids behind me. But, it's interesting how many people aren't willing to drive through Chicago even during good weather.
Life with three children and a dog is a journey with multiple hats. All these hats might not fit perfectly, but I pop a seem or restitch one where needed in my attempt to be an everyday woman.

The switcharoo
In Michigan, I'm visiting my relatives for the holidays. We've just finished dinner at a restaurant. There are about eight of us so we took two cars. It's dark out and I don't know my way around town very well. My Uncle, my cousin and one of my daughters are in my car and I'm following my other Uncle back to his house. In the spirit of the holidays, we are talking about the Christmas lights and a number of other humorous things that I won't mention.
Notice my Uncle in my car is from Michigan and is very familiar with the area. I figure if I lose my Uncle that I am following we will still find our way back.
So we continue following the truck in front of us and our conversation is getting more silly as we go, but we are having a good old time.
I hear my Uncle say, "Weird they are going this way." I continue to follow the truck. Then I realize nothing looks familiar and the truck in front of us is pulling into a house I've never seen before. As everything comes to fruition, I have just followed the wrong truck home to the wrong house. I burst out in hysterical laughter. But, I quickly pass the house that the truck pulled into and circle the neighborhood and get back out to the road we came in on.
My Uncle that is sitting next to me can't figured out what just happened, but I remember that another truck had slipped in front of me when my other Uncle switched lanes. Since we were having so much fun with our conversation, I forgot about it and ended up in an unfamiliar neighborhood. The funny part was that the truck was the same color and had a very similar license plate.
Good thing my other Uncle was with me to get us back home, but I couldn't stop laughing all the way home. I had everyone laughing in the car with me by the time we got to the right house.

In Line
You know when you finished your grocery list in the store, the cart is overflowing, and you push your heavy load to the check out line. All the lines are three deep so you just pick whichever and read the covers of all the gossip magazines while you wait. Of course, no one wants to get behind you in line because of the load you are pushing around.
Once the conveyor belt moves, you start to unload. Trying to move as quickly as possible, a small prick of perspiration breaks out along your hairline, to get all the groceries out so you can move the cart to the end. Feeling guilty that you have so much stuff, you try to help the bagger get some of the groceries back into the cart before the checker finishes.
Then the checker states your total. Granted, you know you have spent way too much, but rationalize you needed it all to get through the next few weeks. But, nothing weakens your knees more when you open your wallet and your favorite credit card is missing (or debit card if you prefer). Basically, your heart drops to your stomach and your last five places you visited before flash in front of you, trying to trace your steps.
Wham, you remember that you pulled the card out to pay for gas and you left the card in your right pocket. Your hand slides slowly into your pocket only to thank God you feel the little rectangular piece of plastic. Swiping the card, signing your name and pushing your cart to the car. And you take a deep breath because you made it through another grocery trip successfully.

Christmas Boycot
I think Christmas should be taken off the calendar. The only thing that should be done on Christmas is going to church and/or volunteering for charity. No one should get gifts everyone should just spend time together.
Oh wait, if no one bought any gifts then our materialistic economy would crash. And we would be swallowed up by all the useless crap we didn't buy.
Wow! Am I becoming philosophical?
Make life simple. Merry Christmas Everyone!

Winter vs Skin
The winter sucks. Dry skin, shivering, shoveling, scraping windows...
Actually, I don't mind the winter too much. I like playing in the snow, sledding with the kids, ice fishing, snowmobiling, etc., but I really hate dry itchy skin in the winter. The other day I cut my cuticle, not just a little slice, but a complete severed cuticle. Adding the dry skin, it exacerbates everything. Every bump and touch hurts like hell. Not to mention the redness and swelling around the area. No amount of lotion is going to help me here.
I know I'm not the most carefullest with my hands. I tend to have cuts and bruises from doing everyday things. Damn, I think a cut cuticle is worst than a deep paper cut. It seems to take forever to heal.
Okay, I'm done complaining. I will move on. Have a great day!

Professional Gambler
I know it has been awhile since I have posted anything, but I've been busy. The unemployment line keeps getting longer.
From marketing expert to professional gambler, its not too far of a stretch. Don't worry about me, I'm back to playing the stock market.

Finally!
Since our freezer was making snow and the refrigerator was sweating more than I do when I work out, the hubby finally agreed to buy some appliances for the kitchen. So the day comes when they deliver the stove and fridge. The stove slides in nicely in its space. Then it comes the refrigerator's turn...
Of course, it doesn't fit. I call the hubby that was supposed to measure the space before we bought the appliances at the store. Pissed off, he tells me he will be home in five minutes (he was on his way home).
As a man, he has to try out the space just to make sure it doesn't fit even though I had said it didn't fit. He threatens to have them send it back.
"Absolutely not, I have this in the house and it is staying" (I didn't actually say that, but that is what I was thinking). Diplomatically, I reply, "You can just take out the cabinet above. We don't really use it anyway." He stares at it for awhile and finally agrees.
The refrigerator stays and the cabinet gets remove. There are only a few holes in the drywall above the refrigerator, but who would even worry about that when I have a new refrigerator.

Lights Out
Lights went out at the gym today due to a nasty storm. No problem I'll just cut my workout short you might have thought. The problem was I already had finished and I was in the shower. I was okay with shaving my legs in the dark, but I felt bad for all the little old ladies. Sometimes it can be exciting in Wisconsin too, its not all about drinking beer.

Fashionable Cuts
Waking up next to a precious little smiling face this morning made me do a double take. First because she was only an inch away from my face, second I didn't expect someone to be staring at me while I was sleeping, and third my vision was a little blurry with sleep and I thought something was different with Child #2. Ignoring the thought, I closed my eyes again and said good morning.
After I realized it was a school day, I got up to perform my usual morning routine with the kids, making breakfast. Once I have them settled at the table, I sit down with them to eat my breakfast. Now that my blurry vision had cleared and I was talking with them.
I said, "Oh my God! You cut your hair." And then I busted out laughing. I mean not just the normal chuckle, the deep down barrel laugh tumbled out.
Both Child #2 and Child#3 started crying and telling me, "You're not supposed to laugh at us. It isn't funny, Mom!"
Apparently they didn't expect me to laugh. I think they were expecting me to get mad and yell at them. All I could think about is when I was five and cut my bangs as short as Child #2 did. It was absolutely hilarious.
Child #2 cut her bangs way up on her forehead, which I thought was adorable. Child #3 cut her bangs on a slight angle sweeping into her longer curls, which I thought was very fashionable.
At least their school pictures had already been taken, but I'm sure the Christmas card will reveal the evidence.

Lots of Drama
With less humidity, the weather was beautiful enough to cut the grass today. When I started the lawn mower, I scared a mouse out from a large rock in our yard. Running for his life, he ran across the driveway. Since the kids were outside, I kept pushing the lawnmower to see if any of them would see the mouse. I wanted to see what their reactions would (I know I can be mean sometimes). As I watch the path of the mouse running for its life, WHAM!
The poor little guy gets hit by a scooter. Unknown to Child #1 that she has run over a mouse, I go to check on it. I figured the mouse got hit and would scurry off dazed.
Oh no. The ugly little thing is lying there squirming with half its brain hanging out of its side. I grabbed a shovel and tried to scoop it up, but it wouldn't scoop up. Now there was a little streak of blood on the driveway and three children are curious to what I am doing. I go back into the garage grab another object to push the mouse onto the shovel and throw it in the garbage.
Child #3 is saying, "Awww, poor mouse." Child #2 is so grossed out she stays back. Child #1 is saying, "I didn't know I ran it over."
I go back to mowing the lawn.
An hour later, I finish the lawn and Child #1 comes out telling me that she tried the fishy water and it doesn't taste good. I'm not quite sure what she means by fishy water so I'm guessing her sisters and her took fishy crackers and mixed it with water (my kids tend to do crazy experiments with or without parental guidance). I tell her I don't understand what she is talking about.
On my way into the house, she comes out with a jug of oil I used for frying chicken last night.
Child #1 says, "We thought it was tea so Child #2 and I tried some of it."
I doubled over laughing. After I calmed down, I asked, "How did it taste?"
They both scrunched up their faces in a disgusted look. I explained to them that it was oil from the chicken last night.
Child #1 immediately got scared. "What's going to happen to me?" Child #1 starts to blame Child #2 for making her try it and Child #2 starts crying and saying she is sorry.
I replied with another laugh, "You might get sick, but most likely nothing." She thought the oil was car oil. Child #2 started to cry.
Lesson learned "Don't drink something unless you really know what it is." Maybe. Let's hope this will sink in for the good teenage years:)
Enough drama for today. Have a great day!

Public or Private
Whoever said public school was free was completely wrong.
After spending half the day purchasing school supplies and labeling all supplies (even individual pencils need to be labeled) for three children going into school this fall, my pocket book is much lighter. I am wondering where the revenue from our property taxes is going. Then there is the fees and forms day. Another chuck out of the wallet.
All I have left for my hard work for the day is a blister on my finger from having to sharpen all the fifty No. 2 pencils that are required.
I still haven't bought school shoes yet. God help me!

Funny Eggs
Grocery Shopping,
Bought eggs,
Brought groceries home,
Put groceries away,
Could not find eggs,
One week later,
Found eggs,
Eggs in deep freezer
Frozen eggs
It could have been worse, but now I can enter a contest for poems.

Biker Gang
Two down, one to go. We are almost a complete biker family. That is, the pedal kind of biking.
I have to thank www.craigslist.com Child #2 needed a bigger bike so I found a perfect one for twenty dollars. What's the point of buying a brand new bike when they grow out of it in one season.
Child #2 is now officially riding a two wheel bike as of yesterday. Amazingly, #2 was twenty times easier to teach how to ride than Child #1. I was so happy I was ready to cry. I only held onto the bike for about one minute and she took off.
And Child #3 is not too far behind. Yay!
This summer has been great for bike riding.

Ignore or keep explaining?
Apparently, the more you do with your kids, the more they want. I am still trying to figure out the perfect balance for my kids, but I might be loosing the battle on this one.
James and I love to do things with our kids, but sometimes when we come off a busy weekend they tend to whine when we aren't doing something during the week. Now, I have always made a point to have down time, but as they get older and see what others are doing they want to do the same.
On the flip side, sometimes they complain when we have to go to the grocery store or to Target. I probably won't ever get away from the complaining, but I tend to get upset when their complaining is not justified.
Normally, I explain that they are very fortunate children considering not everyone gets to do what they do. My standard comments "Life is not fair" "Some children won't ever get a chance to do what you are doing" "We can't afford to do that" "Not every family has three children" "We're not rich." James has just accepted that our children are spoiled, but offers no help on how to change their attitude. Should I ignore the complaining or should I keep saying my comments?

Dinner Love...Love Dinner
Making dinner has been a task that humans have been performing since...well as long as humans have been around, of course (I thought about saying dahhh, but then my inner child would be surfacing again).
Getting back to my point, someone has to make dinner everyday. As you all know, since I am out of a job, the task has been assigned to me (Yay!)
Now that I am not rushed to make dinner in warp speed after a stressful day at work, I am actually enjoying going through the motions of preparing some meals (did you notice the formatting on some). So maybe there is more love going into my cooking now that I am not on a tight schedule. Happier mom, (I think) happier kids.
But, tonight's dinner got something extra special. I was making Mostacholi and finishing up shredding the mozzarella cheese when that last shred didn't sound quite right. Something like a grinding sound rather than a smooth cheese shred sound. If you are imagining the blood dripping all over the cheese, you guessed right, I shredded the skin off the top of my thumb knuckle.
Of course, I have to finish making dinner so I wrap a paper towel around my thumb and continue. So basically, my kids get love, sweat and blood in my dinners.
Shhh. They would never notice the blood in the cheese since the sauce is already red.
Just kidding, no blood actually went into the meal (I'm pretty sure).

A Mommy Question
I know I haven't done things in a conventional way, but being the stay at home mom now versus when the kids were babies is really working out in my favor (The kids are way more fun now and mouthy, but more fun). I am enjoying my kids even with their individually flawed personalities. It definitely makes life more interesting.
Anyway, I completely digressed. I have a question that has been racking my brain in the mommy world for awhile now.
Can someone please answer, "Why Caillou(cartoon on PBS) is still bald at the age of four when his younger sister has a full head of hair at the age of one?" I know the shaved look is in, but come on. He has to grow hair sometime. He walks around with a baby head and a four year old body. This is very disturbing to me.
I have no idea why Child #2 and #3 are so intrigued with this show, but they insist on watching it, which I happily oblige since things could be a lot worse. They could be asking to watch Sponge Bob (I thoroughly despise that show).

Best Compliment for the Year Doubled by a Goal
After thirty, the youthful compliments don't come as often as they use to. The sad realities of aging, but I wouldn't change anything. No regrets.
I digress so the best compliment I have gotten for the year is...drum roll...
"Are you Child #3's sister?"
And this wasn't asked in any sarcastic tone either, but I do have to reveal that the question came from a cute five year old boy on Child #3's soccer team after our last game (Did I mention I am the assistant coach for the team?)
He made my day, but I had to let him down easy. "No sweetie, I'm her mommy."
Child #3 scored her first goal. Considering she is the youngest on the team, this is a huge deal. She might have been more proud of herself than us since she was jumping all around the field with a huge smile. We were so proud.

3 times, everytime
$227,000. Does the average cost to raise a kid to the age of eighteen include all the activities they are involved in?
At least with diapers, you pay as you go.
This soccer thing is a little expensive. Having one child in soccer wasn't bad, but now that I have added three children to next season's roster, HOLY COW! I guess we could cut something else out like Sunday school (just kidding, Mom). At least the cost includes the Fall and Spring season.
I hate having to pay for things so far in advance. Maybe the soccer club should come up with a payment plan like monthly installments. Okay now I am just dreaming, but it's a good thought.

Mother's Day
Why is it that Dads go fishing or golfing with the Grandpas on Father's Days and Mom's end up having to hang out with the whole family on Mother's Day? And we still have to do the dishes and help prepare meals.
When I am asked what I want to do for Mother's Day, I just want to be left alone in silence so I can read a book or write on my blog. Then the response is that that isn't mother-like for Mother's day and I can't do that.
I enjoy hanging out with my family, but then stop asking me what I want for Mother's Day because I am not going to get what I want anyway.
Bah humbug!

Rocked the Field
Child #1 just came out of her shell in soccer. She rocked on the soccer field today. She worked so hard getting the ball down the field and it finally paid off with three goals and one awesome assist. We were so excited and proud of her. It was an awesome confidence builder for her.
And yes, we are those parents screaming and cheering on the sidelines. If the image helps, I never sit down while watching her play soccer. And just so you are all clear most of the other moms don't talk to me.
Now the question is "Did the goals mean more to her parents than her?"
My answer is "No. She felt proud of herself after making the goals so whether we were more excited than her doesn't matter as long as she feels the confidence."
On a side note, it doesn't matter what sport she wants to play we will support her fully. Soccer is just the first sport we started her with. She is awesome at smacking a baseball too. Only time will tell what she will choose.

Mother's Day Gift
Child #1 comes home yesterday with a Mother's Day card that she made at school. Attached to the card were 2 Hershey Kisses and 1 one hundred grand mini candy bar. After school is definitely snack time for my kids, which a small snack is my solution to the never ending questions "What's for dinner?" "I'm starving." "When are we going to eat?"
Anyway, without even a thought Child #1 ripped off all the candy on the card and ate every last piece of candy. She didn't even offer any to her sisters who were complaining they don't get any candy. Because the mother I am, I knew she wanted to eat the candy. I saw the greediness in her eyes before we even got out of the truck when we got home. But I thought she would have at least asked me first. Nope. Nothing.
I was so intrigued by her behavior that I waited for her to finish all the candy before I said anything (What? Sometimes guilt is better than correction).
She finished the candy licking her lips and chocolate stains on her face.
Then I asked, "Wasn't that card for Mother's Day?"
"Yes," Child #1 answered.
"Wouldn't the candy be included in that card for Mother's Day?"
"But Mooommmm, I made it and I wanted the candy."
"But what if I wanted the candy isn't Mother's Day for me?"
"Mom, you wouldn't have liked it anyway."
I left it at that for her to think about it. I had to hold back all my chuckling because I thought it was hilarious. Not that I condone the selfishness, but she is the first child and she always gives into her sisters and is a very selfless child most of the time so I wasn't going to stop her from her minor lapse of selfishness. Other parents might disagree, but this is my blog so I can write what I want:)
Another parent response (a close friend's reply), "Well, that's what you get for being healthy all the time."
I could only laugh at the response. Child #1 really assumed I wouldn't want the candy. Which is completely fine, I will keep to my secret stash of Riesen:)

Flights
Did you know that a direct flight doesn't actually mean direct flight anymore?
Well, let me explain the new terminology for you.
As long as your flight number on the plane is the same the airlines can still consider it a direct flight. We leave Milwaukee, land in Phoenix, exit the plane, wait two hours, re-board the same plane and continue onto Mexico.
I know sometimes things go over my head, but to me this sounds like a lay over.
The airlines suck. I mean really suck. Did I mention that the airlines suck?

Post-Vacation
Yay, we made it back in one piece. Puerto Vallarta was fun. We tried out the zip lining. LOVED IT! I definitely recommend it. The beach brought back my childhood memories swimming in the ocean back in San Diego. The waves were awesome. We are both pretty strong swimmers so we love riding the waves.
Of course, we ate too much and drank too much (I gained the exact five pounds I lost before the trip), but we walked it off on the beach and played a few tennis matches (I think I lost every game, obviously I am not much of a tennis player). We were able to walk on the beach for several miles checking out other resorts and watching dolphins swim not to far from the shore.
Oh yeah, I tried out Karaoke for the first time. Um, not such a good site. If you want to know, my husband will have to be the story teller. I'm definitely not sharing.
Overall, it was a great vacation, but we will be heading back to the Caribbean next time.

Pre-vacation
It always amazes me how much I have to prepare before I leave for a vacation with my husband. The kids schedules, clothes, shoes, bikes, blankets, school info, etc. has to be shipped over to the in-laws. And then I have to get myself ready and check my husband's stuff too (so I'm a little bit of a control freak, but I really have lightened up, really).
Yeah, yeah, I know I shouldn't be complaining, but it always stresses me out. I am always afraid I am going to forget something.

Sock Monster
There was mystery in my house. Missing socks. I was going to go the store and buy some more, but I thought I would do all the laundry first to get a better picture of how many socks the girls had and how many I would need to buy.
Of course, I think it would be a good idea after a few warm weather days to turn my whole house upside down switching out all the winter clothes with summer clothes (yes, I left jeans and a few sweat shirts out). So this turns into my spring cleaning of the girls bedrooms. Big mistake. I mean really big mistake. Extremely big mistake.
It was like pulling the small little thread attached to your shirt that ends up unraveling the whole bottom seam in the shirt.
I never realized that behind the dresser and under the bed was considered a closet, but who am I to question that. I completely enjoyed every moment of pulling out pants, shirts, pajamas, books, toys and (you got it) all the missing socks.
The sock monster must be extremely hungry these days.

Great conversations, but enough is enough
Over Christmas, we brought the kids to visit both of their great grandmothers at the nursing home. Nursing homes are very depressing, but you brings kids in and all the residents light up.
Shortly after that visit, Great Grandma Broekema (RIP) at 93 years old passed on. We chose to bring the girls to the funeral, which was open casket. This probably is very controversial, but we made our decision so we were able to have conversations on many levels about death, life and heaven.
It has been about three months since the funeral and there is not a day that doesn't go by that we don't have a conversation or question about heaven and death.
It is great that we have such great conversations, but I really need a break from death and heaven. So lets talk about the weather.

Lowered Stress Levels
Apparently not working is bad for my health. I have been sick since February and can't seem to shake this cough I have. It started with a dry cough that turned into a sinus infection (got antibiotics). The sinus infection cleared up, but I was still coughing and (close your eyes) hacking up Flem.
At this point, it has been five weeks and my husband threatens we will cancel the vacation if I am still hacking up a lung. So I go back to the doctor, he says my lungs are clear, but we agree on trying an inhaler.
The inhaler helps with the coughing spasms, but now my nose has become congested again. I can't win.
Apparently my body was in high stress mode for so long that it has completely crashed. Or my other theory is this is turning into some kind of allergy from the season change.
The irony of this whole episode is that my husband has started with a dry cough and will probably progress through the same symptoms into our vacation.
Well you won't see me threatening to cancel our vacation because of a little cough:)

Toilet Paper
Everyone loves to do it at home.
Get your mind out of the gutter.
When I had three kids in diapers, I use to think I can't wait for them to all be potty trained. I would have extra money in my pocket.
Apparently, I was wrong.
Now that I am staying home, my household goes through a 24 pack of double roll toilet paper per week. You might ask, how is this possible?
Well apparently when you have four girls in the house going to the bathroom several times a day it adds up. And then you add dad into the mix who likes to do it at home. Viola! I have to go to the store every week to get more toilet paper.
I cringe at the thought of when puberty hits and I will be back to the budget of the diapers with having to buy additional paper products.
You can all let out your sympathy moan now. Have a great day!

Anniversary Date Night
We went out to a restaurant to celebrate our anniversary together. We picked a Japanese Stake house (Seigos in Sussex, WI). We've been before and really enjoy the fun atmosphere (I love the Martinis).
Except this time, we were seated with an older couple and a family with four kids (probably just bad luck). The whole point for us to go out is to not be with kids.
Surprisingly, the kids were well behaved, but I wasn't really interested in having a conversation with children between the ages of 5 and 12 (especially on a Saturday evening). Which was good because James and I really enjoy each other so we have a lot to talk about. We basically chatted with ourselves and briefly with the older couple next to us.
By this time, we've avoided talking with the family, however, I've overheard her conversation with the older couple and all she can talk about is her kids.
After two Martinis, I have to use the restroom so when I come back James has been sucked into a conversation with the mom of the family. And of course, she pulls me into the conversation about my kids. I am trying to be polite and let her chat about her kids. She is oblivious to how irritated we and the older couple are with having to talk about children so I think some of my comments have really gone over her head.
Now remember I am working on my third Martini by this time.
Example 1, the million dollar question that is always asked to us "Are you going to have anymore children?" My response, "Absolutely NOT!" She continues to go on how she would love to have more children (yeah because you have nothing else to talk about and not once does she talk to her husband during the dinner). At this point I stick my finger down my throat, figuratively.
Example 2, Then she talks about how great it is to have the older ones take care of the younger ones like on their family vacation. My response, "I want my children to be children not parents and I will never make my older children be responsible for the younger ones." She still doesn't get the hint.
Example 3, Without missing a beat, she goes into how her youngest has such stomach problems with different kinds of foods. I think my eyes have gone cross-eyed at this point. I think the old couple is chuckling at my comments. I might have been a little snappy when I said, "Well you figure out what foods don't work and you don't feed them those anymore."
We finally got our bill, paid and quickly left. Now, I was laughing by the time I got out to the parking lot, but come on.
Note to all mothers out there when having conversations with other adults (not your girlfriends): If you can't hold a conversation without talking about your kids, please pick up a newspaper or read an article online. This will arm you with other topics to talk about.

Nine Years
It's pretty scary when Child #1 comes home from school discussing with Child #2 and #3 about who they are going to live with if mom and dad get a divorce. Apparently half of the kids in school have divorce parents (oh, the innocence is disappearing). Somehow this has turned into some kind of cool status because these kids get to do a lot more things. Then again, Child #1 claims she is the only one in her class that hasn't been to Disney World (Of course, my response to this is "has any of the kids been on a airplane to Washington DC?, Hah!). I am not ready to take them to Disney, frankly, I don't really want to take them to Disney.
Anyway I digress, my point here is James and I have been married nine year in March. Evidently for our ages, a nine year marriage, not to mention a first marriage, is pretty rare. We are finding ourselves as the minority rather than the majority (How sad is that?). This doesn't even include the couples who want to get divorce, but can't afford it right now.
I can't imagine what the future will hold for our youth, especially for my children. It is scary to think the generations behind us are taking any kind of commitment so leisurely.

Locker Room Etiquette
Now I remember why I don't join gyms.
I completely forgot about the locker room at a gym. I understand that having conversations in the locker room is completely inevitable. Sometimes I feel like I am in the geriatric unit of the hospital, but no one has any clothes on. Please people at least put some underwear on. Maybe this makes me a prude, but come on, standing in the middle of the locker room naked for a ten minute conversation about what procedure you are going to endure this week has to be a little on the weird side. Wouldn't you be cold?
Another issue I forgot about is territory.
I was dressed, my stuff packed and I walked over to a mirror. I just had to comb my hair and put a little powder on (it would take me 2 minutes). I placed my make-up case down on the counter, I was abruptly stopped by one of those geriatric patients.
She said, "You're in my spot."
I looked around the counter and there was nothing that would indicate she had placed anything down. So I replied with just a little attitude "Oh! Oookay." Now what I wanted to say was I don't see your name anywhere, but of course, I held my tongue. I slid my stuff down the counter to give her "spot" to her and went on my merry way of combing my hair.
Except she couldn't just leave me alone. She caught my reaction and was trying to back peddle because she realized how ridiculous she sounded.
She continued, "You must be new here."
I couldn't really reply so I just said, "hmm."
She said, "It is kind of a joke around here because we all have our own spots. And plus I have so much stuff I need the space." As she is placing multiple bottles of product on the counter. But she couldn't help herself, she repeated, "You must be new."
I replied, "You might consider me new."
She said, "Well, when you have been here for ten years you just get accustom to a spot."
I had to get out of there so I just said, "Oh! Oookay." (Maybe with a tiny bit more attitude). And I walked out. My expression probably didn't help matters.
I probably wouldn't have been so irritated, but this was the same woman in the pool that asked me to stop doing flip turns while I swam because I was causing the lane line to move into her lane. She completely interrupted my workout and I didn't want to stop doing flip turns. I was kind of irritated. Okay maybe I was a little pissed because after I stopped doing the flip turns she stopped swimming and had a ten minute conversation with another woman in the next lane.
We will see what happens next time. Don't worry. I won't do anything crazy, but being a little passive aggressive can be fun:)

Windless, but icy...
So the weather has been indecisive lately. Wisconsin goes from rain (which melts all the snow on the lake) to 9 degrees (which freezes the rain on the lake) and back to a light fluffy snow cover (which covers the lake).
Anyway, today we drive out onto the ice to do a little ice fishing. Nephew #1 and Nephew #2 are out on the ice already waiting for us. The girls are really excited to get out of the truck. We park and James goes to help his brother get the holes drilled and I open my door to get out to help the kids get out of the truck. I place my foot down on the ground and before I know it I am laying on my back under the truck door. Of course, I am laughing on the ground and I can hear the kids getting mad because I am not helping them out of the truck. I recover, get up and help the kids out.

Everyone was having a blast running and sliding on the snow. At this time, there were several holes in the ice with tip-ups and a few holes were open for jigging. Nephew #2 was running and his foot disappeared under the ice. His leg went all the way up to his knee. His dad put him in the truck to dry off his boot and sock.

Then the girls had to go potty so I packed them up in the truck and drove them back to the house. We came back and I opened the door to get out of the truck and, yep, again I am lying on back under the truck door.
Apparently the ice was more slippery than I expected it to be.
The girls brought back buckets and shovels. As the kids were building snow castles, Child #3 freaks out and I see she had dipped both of her gloved hands into the water in the hole. I see she lost the shovel in the water so I pull her hands out, grab the shovel and tell her she can't put her hands in the water like that. I take her immediately to the car to warm her hands and dry her gloves out. Poor baby, she was so upset that she was going to loose her shovel.
What an adventure. With all that drama, everyone still had a great time.

Girly-Girls vs Tomboys
I love it, but I don't get it.
The girls choose to wear dresses, tights and all the girly-girl stuff for Child #1's winter school concert. And I let them pick out their dresses and tights even if they don't match (I completely support individualism. Child#3 wore a spring tank top light green flower dress with a long sleeve pink and white poodle shirt and brown tights, black shoes).
All three act sophisticated and mature during the concert. Child #2 is extremely excited for next year when she will be able to get up on the stage and sing.
Then we get home from school and I take a few minutes to talk with James before I start dinner. Meanwhile Child #1 and Child #2 decide that it would be fun to run from the back of the hallway to the kitchen and slide on their knees (still dressed in dresses and tights). Each one is trying to see how far they can slide. Next they get the great idea to fold a blanket, run and slide on the blanket across the kitchen floor (I have to say it does look fun).
I know you were expecting someone to get hurt, so was I. No one got hurt.
So I can relate to the crazy act (it really looked fun), but the girly-girl stuff is a little foreign to me(at least when I was a kid, my mom always had to fight to get braids and dresses on me). Maybe you can be both a girly-girl and a tomboy. As a kid I always thought you couldn't be both, but that could be because I grew up with two brothers.
I guess the girls will be more well rounded than I was. They can dress girly, but can have fun when they want to. Only time will tell.
I am really enjoying this.

Gym Factor
So the last time I used a gym was when I was teaching swimming lessons/lifeguarding at the the YWCA/YMCA (I think over 12 years ago). And the only reason I used the facilities then was because it was free.
Over the years, I have thought about joining a gym. The main factors I used to prevent myself from signing up for one was money (of course, I only buy things on sale) and because it would be way too inconvenient to haul my butt there.
Since then, I have acquired a treadmill and recumbent bike (which I use consistently during the week and love the convenience) in my basement ( I would love a universal machine, but we currently have other priorities right now. Oh, I don't know like food). This has been my mode for training for triathlons (except when it is warm out, I will run and ride outside). Plus having kids makes it way too hard to get to a gym. Or at least that is what I have been telling myself for the last 7 years.
Understanding that I don't really train for the swimming part of the triathlons (yeah, I know, I don't train at all), I thought, since I am not working right now, I could maybe start training for the swimming part. Oh wait, it's winter. Oh and I don't belong to a gym. Interesting thoughts.
Wouldn't you know fate intervened and I just received a free membership to a local gym. Since I am not working right now, I will be able to train for the swim part after all. That is, of course, until I find a new job.
I just took the tour of the facility. Child #2 and #3 (Child #1 was in school) absolutely loved the play area. I am already planning out my schedule to take part in classes, weight lifting and lap swimming. Now, I will be able to play Racket Ball with my husband again. I think I am going to have to be accountable for those last ten pounds now unless I can just use the excuse its all muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. Right?
Friends appear in mysterious ways. Thank you Music Man.
In conclusion, the only factor that really prevented me from joining a gym was the cost.
Grandpa, you would be proud:)

Mom, what if...
"Mom, what if no one had heads?"
"Mom, what if no one had lips?"
"Mom, what if you mix french fries with snow?"
"Mom, what if you take ketchup and put it around your eyes?"
Over the past few days, I started to analyze a few of Child#2's questions. I hadn't really thought about this until she had asked about the french fries, but looking back she asks at least one of these types of questions every day.
Either she is going to be a stand up comedian or we may have a creative scientist on our hands. I am not sure which one is scarier. Every time she asks this type of question, I answer with a really long and in depth answer. And I absolutely love to watch her absorb my answers. I can see the wheels turning as she is absorbing and thinking of her next question.
However, the french fry one really made me laugh. After I laughed, both Child #2 and #3 broke out with a full barrel laugh (which my most favorite thing about being a parent, to hear them really laugh), which made me laugh even more.
I have to say I am really enjoying myself and I will have to catalog more of these questions as they come up.

Catch 22
Well, Child #2 and #3 are extremely happy to stay home, but Child #1 is extremely mad. She has claimed it is not fair she has to go to school and her sisters get to stay home. She feels completely jipped. Depending on how long it takes me to find a job, she might be jipped for a little while.
It is definitely nice to be able to get dinner ready at a decent time and to enjoy it. And not to have a pile of laundry always waiting for me to fold. It has been fun spending more time with the girls and playing mommy. These are special times I will enjoy and embrace forever.
Everything happens for a reason...

X Employee
Well it is official, I am among the 30% of unemployed. I may have to change this blog to Mother, Wife, Unemployed and Myself. Unless you all have a better suggestion. I am up for anything new.
Everything happens for a reason so I will take this opportunity to search for something more interesting and exciting. For now, I am in search of a new adventure.

Romantic Slip Away
After the very busy rush of Christmas and the New Year, child #2 has a birthday on January 4th. Since she is so particular about what she will wear, I decided I would take her shopping for some shirts and she could pick out what she wants. She also said she wanted a ring.
Now when you go about looking for rings for little kid hands, it is extremely hard to find a ring that is not made out of cheap crap. We searched high and low and finally found a ring and necklace set that had three rings and three necklaces (cheap, but maybe would last after several wearings). I told her she could get it as long as she would share the other two sets with her sisters. She was more than happy to share.
So we brought home the ring and necklaces. Child #1 and #3 are very excited that Child #2 would share with them.
All is well until the next day, Child #3 is stealing Child #1's ring and a big fight breaks out. I asked her where is her ring. She shrugged with a guilty look and said she doesn't know where it is. I ask again where is was. With a sad look and whiny tone, she said she was washing her hands after she went potty and it fell down the sink.
Of course, I asked why didn't she tell us and she just shrugged. Great how many more things have gone down the sink without us knowing it. Oh well, at least nothing has clogged up yet.
